How do glow sticks work?
Glow sticks are interesting and useful products that can come in handy in a variety of situations. You’ve probably encountered them a number of times before at all kinds of events, like concerts, dances, celebrations, and other night time get-togethers. If you’ve ever wondered exactly what a glow stick is and how they work, you may be surprised to find that they are actually rather simple in their composition. Let’s take a closer look at what goes into making a glow stick, how they function, and what makes them so useful.
Glow sticks are composed of three main chemicals: hydrogen peroxide, phenyl oxalate ester, and fluorescent dye. The hydrogen peroxide solution is generally stored in a small tube inside of the glow stick, while the phenyl oxalate ester and fluorescent dye surround it. These two chemical compounds remain separated until you snap the glow stick, which breaks open the inner tube and mixes them together. The hydrogen peroxide solution acts as an “activator” to the chemical dye, causing the glowing light that you want. This process is known as chemiluminescence – it’s the generation of light without the generation of heat. It’s a very interesting scientific system that can be performed with inexpensive products and in a safe way.
